/ Hello

I'm Sam Kellogg. I'm a writer, researcher, editor, teacher, photographer, and long-distance trekker.

I'm currently working on a PhD at the department of Media, Culture, and Communication at NYU. My research ranges across questions of media, philosophy, history, and anthropology. I am interested in, among other things, questions of technological change, the (geo)politics of telecommunications infrastructures, digitality and computation, AI and machine learning, labor, imperialism, and space.

I'm also Assistant Editor at Public Culture, a peer-reviewed interdisciplinary journal of cultural studies. Public Culture has been publishing field-defining ethnographies and analyses of the cultural politics of globalization for over thirty years. It remains a vital forum for the discussion of the places and occasions where cultural, social, and political differences emerge as public phenomena — everything from highly particular and localized events in popular or folk culture to global advertising, consumption, and information networks.

When I'm not in New York City, you can usually find me in the mountains, finding places the Internet still doesn't reach. I've thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail (2009), the Pacific Crest Trail (2014), and had the unbelievable priveledge of winding my way through a number of other high-altitude places, in the Americas, Eurasia, and Australia.

On that note, in July and August of 2020, I'll be leading two expeditions with Studio D Radiodurans in the Wakhan Corridor, Afghanistan. There, we'll be working to understand new forms of tourism in the region, and mapping established and new trekking routes between and among the alpine valleys and passes that constitute the zone between the High Pamir and the Hindu Kush mountain ranges. (If you're interested in joining the team, you can apply here).

If you'd like, you can also access some of my writing, along with my CV.

And, feel free to get in touch with me however you see fit; that's what the Internet is for!
